Sustainability Report 2015

Deutsche Wohnen demonstrates its sustainability performance once again with increased transparency

Frankfurt am Main/Berlin, 21 June 2016. Today, Deutsche Wohnen published its sustainability report for the financial year 2015. The report complements the annual report and provides comprehensive information about the sustainability activities of the company and about ecological, social and employee-related indicators. It is guided by the standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), which are recognised worldwide.

Leading role within the residential housing sector in Germany

For the first time, the report meets the G4 version of the GRI guidelines. On the basis of the principle of "materiality" and taking into consideration a stakeholder survey, Deutsche Wohnen prioritised the sustainability topics that determined the contents of the report and its strategic direction. It also further developed its sustainability programme and furnished it with much more detailed aims and objectives. In comparison to previous reports, Deutsche Wohnen also provided significantly more detail in order to meet the sector-specific requirements of the European Public Real Estate Association (EPRA). As Michael Zahn, CEO of Deutsche Wohnen AG, explains, "Deutsche Wohnen wants to take on a leading role in the residential property sector and also promote transparency and comparability with regard to sustainable performance. This is why we are providing information in today's report for the fourth time in accordance with the globally recognised GRI standard as the first publicly listed German residential property company."

Investments in the quality and energy efficiency of our holdings

In 2015 Deutsche Wohnen won the German Developers' Award for Modernisation [Deutscher Bauherrenpreis Modernisierung] for its complete refurbishment of the listed railway workers' estate in Elstal, Brandenburg. The jury gave particular recognition to the fact that Deutsche Wohnen had succeeded in restoring the original historic character of the estate whilst carrying out a wide-ranging energy-efficient refurbishment. Numerous projects will follow. In order to make further improvements to the quality and energy efficiency of its holdings, Deutsche Wohnen has expanded its extensive modernisation programme from EUR 280 million to an investment volume totalling EUR 400 million until the end of 2018. In all of this, the company's strategic cooperation with G+D Gesellschaft für Energiemanagement mbH (a company specialising in the management of energy resources) plays an important role. G+D reorganises the energy management of our holdings in order to improve the energy efficiency of our generating facilities and to achieve a sustainable reduction in CO2 emissions and energy costs.

Pioneer in sustainability certification for new building projects

Deutsche Wohnen was also consistently guided by the principle of sustainability in the case of the 103 new apartments that it completed in Potsdam-Babelsberg at the beginning of 2016 for a total of approximately EUR 20 million. The terraced houses were given the preliminary certificate of the German Association for Sustainable Building [Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen - DGNB] and achieved the Gold Standard. In February 2016, Deutsche Wohnen's Westend Estate [Stadtquartier Westend] project in Berlin was given a Platinum Award - the highest award possible - by the DGNB. This makes the estate, which is planned in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, one of the first estates with a focus on housing for rental in Germany to be pre-certificated by the DGNB. Deutsche Wohnen also wishes to initiate further new building projects.

More intensive dialogue with residents, politicians and society at large

Deutsche Wohnen stands for high-quality housing, residential estates with good liveability, and stable neighbourhoods. Accordingly, the company further intensified its contact with residents, politicians and social agencies in the reporting year. When large-scale refurbishment or modernisation projects are planned, Deutsche Wohnen actively seeks to enter into dialogue with its tenants. Moreover, it strengthens its neighbourhoods through its social engagement on a variety of fronts. At the beginning of 2016, Deutsche Wohnen also became a founding member of the "We're in this together" [Wir zusammen] initiative with the aim of working together with other companies to provide inspiration in the search for solutions to the challenges created by increasing migration. With the measures it takes
in its core business, Deutsche Wohnen creates added value for tenants, cities and society.
